Here are some of the things Mary Lou's life represented to those of us who knew her.
-
FAMILY--for Mary Lou this extended far beyond hearth and home, children and grandchildren. For Mary Lou every person she met and many she never knew, but needed a hand or an opportunity were her sisters or brothers or children.
-
DIGNITY--Whether the appearance or deportment of a child, or the right of people to eat a meal, worship or learn in peace, the she treasured the dignity of all people above all else.
-
CIVIL RIGHTS--Regardless of economic status, ethnicity religion or sexual orientation, Mary Lou believed that all people possess the right to full participation in society.
-
SERVICE--For Mary Lou, a life lived to the self was no life at all. Her view of life was perhaps most succinctly described in the prayer of St. Francis of Assissi, "For it is in giving that we receive and it is in pardoning that we are pardoned."
-
AFFIRMATION--Mary Lou's relationships with people went beyond mere tolerance or acceptance. Her goal in any relationship was the complete affirmation of people starting where they were and encouraging them to the highest level of fulfillment.
